Onosereba’s K!lling: Senate summons NDLEA over noncompliance with N200m compensation
The Senate committee on legislative compliance, on Thursday, summoned the Nigeria Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to appear before it unfailingly on the 28th of October, 2025.
The summons is for the agency to explain why it’s yet to comply with the N200 million compensation to the family of Onosereba Omhonria, who was killed by the NDLEA during a raid operation.
The committee is particularly concerned about the deteriorating health condition of Onosereba’s younger brother, Eromonsele, who was also hit in his eyes during the raid.
Ta Reporters Africa, recalled that a two-year-old boy, Onosereba Omhonria, was k!lled by a stray bullet during a raid carried out by operatives of the NDLEA in Asaba, Delta State.
During the raid, Onosereba’s younger brother, Eromonsele, was also hit by a bullet in the eye, resulting in the loss of his sight. The duo had just returned from school to their mother’s shop when the incident happened.
Following the incident, a petition was submitted to the Nigerian Senate, and having looked into it, the upper legislative arm directed the NDLEA to compensate the family with N200 million and take full financial responsibility for Eromonsele’s medical treatment, preferably abroad, to restore his sight.
Addressing journalists after a session with the family at the National Assembly complex, the committee chairman, Sen. Garba Musa Maidoki, said, “Based on what the parents have told us, there is a need to invite the NDLEA.”
“We called the parents of the child, and we had a discussion with them, and they said the NDLEA is yet to even speak with them, and the eye condition of the second child is deteriorating fast.
“So we have scheduled a meeting with the NDAEA for the 28th of October to explain to us why no action has been taken from that date till now,” Senator Maidoki said.
He said the committee will today brief the Senate President, Dr. Godswill Akpabio, so he can use his office to speak to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take the necessary actions to ameliorate the health condition of the child.
“I think this speaks to the conscience of Nigerians; not taking care of our own, it’s so sad, it’s so pathetic,” the committee chairman lamented.
